OHGEESY, a member of Shoreline Mafia, enlists Big Sean for the new single, and the pairing works largely because of what Oh Ross cooked up behind them. The producer reaches back to the funky, synth driven electro and hip hop of the 80s, then updates it with booming low end drums, a thick bassline, and bright piano chords that give the track an almost celebratory feel. It never stalls, and it leaves enough open space for both rappers to settle in. OHGEESY opens in a casual, unbothered tone, boasting about his lifestyle without ever sounding like he is trying too hard. When Big Sean arrives for the second verse, the temperature shifts. His delivery is silkier and more tuneful, and at one point he sings along with himself, stacking vocals that add a layer of color the beat alone does not provide. That contrast between a rapper who stays cool and conversational and another who leans into melody is the heart of the record. Neither one fights the instrumental, and neither tries to outshine the other. The song seems designed for the moments when people are getting ready to go out, driving with the windows down, or packed into a venue, and its steady groove makes it easy to loop. For OHGEESY, the timing matters too. He has been on a solid run lately, and a collaboration with a name as established as Big Sean could push him toward the biggest moment of his solo career so far. Listeners appear to be responding well, and if that continues, “LEFT RIGHT” may end up as a defining entry in his catalog. Give it a spin the next time you need something upbeat.
