Two years after ‘Me vs Myself,’ A Boogie Wit Da Hoodie has finally returned with his latest album ‘Better Off Alone.’ The album includes 21 tracks and was released earlier this summer on May 17th. Despite being a summer drop, the title alone implies dark feelings, particularly loneliness and betrayal. The Bronx rapper has always been open and honest about somber topics such as heartbreak, self-doubt, and loss; Thus, adding ‘Better Off Alone’ to the collection.
Track one, also named “Better Off Alone,” sets the tone for the rest of the album. “Guess I’m better off alone right now, I’m ducked off in Bahamas / Got so much s**t on my shoulders, think my back broke / You know that this money keep on comin’ in / I put that on my mother, I’ve been savin’ up these commas, can’t go back broke.” Taking his family from nothing to everything has led to a lot of stress and pressure on the young rapper to maintain his prosperity and fame; Being beaten down by other negative feelings like heartbreak only makes it worse for him, leading to his desire to be alone.
Another standout track is “D.T.N.” which is seemingly a sister-song to his 2016 track “D.T.B.” Both tracks describe a disloyal partner and how it negatively impacted A Boogie. While “D.T.B” emphasizes frustration and devastation, “D.T.N” emphasizes anger and a new, dark outlook A Boogie has on love.
Although many tracks have a gloomy vibe, there are still some fun ones to keep it interesting. “Booby Trap” was one of the pre-released singles and continues to be a fan-favorite on the album. The track is upbeat with a bit of a haunting energy, utilizing a piano on top of a chill trap beat. The contrast between “Booby Trap” compared to other tracks showcases his range well and adds a unique element to the album.
Despite the sad themes of the album, fans have still been enjoying it throughout the summer, so be sure to take a listen to it below!
