Surely we’ve seen the jokes about Brent Faiyaz being coined the “King of Toxicity” and “City Boy” culture. Well, the 26-year-old has done it again.
The long-awaited debut album from the Maryland-raised R&B singer-songwriter, ‘Wasteland’, is here! His second studio album was released last Friday (July 8th) and includes earlier singles, ‘Price of Fame,’ ‘Wasting Time,’ ‘Gravity,’ and ‘Dead Man Walking.’ The album includes slower, melodic-type beats in addition to three skits which many listeners have stated immersed them in such a way that it felt as if they were eavesdropping on a conversation.
‘Wasteland’ was originally teased with an album trailer on July 13th. The video includes black and white lighting of Faiyaz sitting on the hood of his car in a dim parking lot, lit by one single light, and the headlights of a car while someone spray paints a ‘W..’ on a brick wall behind them. The video then cuts to black and includes names of artists that will be featured on the album such as Alicia Keys, Drake, Jorja Smith, Tyler, The Creator, and many more.
Needless to say, Brent Faiyaz does an amazing job of storytelling a man’s dark and difficult relationship with a woman that he got pregnant with and his toxic ways lead them both to their demise. With his vocals, songwriting, and features throughout the 19-track album, the songs go from a light and airy feel to a darker and heavier tone.
Faiyaz also held pop-ups in Atlanta, New York City, and Los Angeles this past week in which he gave out merch, said hi to fans, and spoke about the recording process of the album!
