The track “On Up” is a pre-released single off of his latest album ‘Better Me Than You,’ which is four years since his previous album ‘Detroit 2.” The track is upbeat hip hop with an old-school and funky vibe. This is quite the juxtaposition when comparing it to the lyrical content.
Opening “On Up” stating it is dedicated to his son Noah, the track delves into his feelings of fatherhood and his worries for Noah within the current state of the world. Lyrics that showcase this concept are, “I look into my son’s eyes and still see his innocence / I see my inner child in him and still the remnants / Will he lose it to the world is it imminent?” While most first-time parents have these concerns, the “I know” rapper goes deeper with the lyrics, “It seemed like the tragedy of losing kids will never calm / I think about Trayvon, Breon, my neighbor Deshaun.” These tragedies hit home for him, making “On Up” a more personal track, in which fans appreciate for the authenticity and vulnerability.
