Chloe Bailey, well known for being one-half of the incomparable group ChloexHalle, has been making strides as a solo artist. She is proving to us that her artistry extends beyond her sister and that she can stand on her own. Chloe’s latest single “For the Night (feat. Latto)” proves this. The “Surprise” singer has been very comfortable expressing her sexuality in her previous singles through her dancing and raunchy lyrics. However, this new single is surprisingly vulnerable. While her lyrics tell a story closer to one of determination and frustration toward a man, the music video adds another dimension to the song.
The song’s accompanying music video tells a story of Chloe’s character not being taken seriously by a man she’s been seeing (played by the internet comedian Druski). The strumming of a guitar on this track helps to communicate those underlying feelings of sadness that Chloe’s character feels.
Latto arrives on the 3rd verse. She delivers her bars with a flow that contrasts Chloe’s smooth vocals. The combination of Chloe’s vocals, the guitar, Latto’s bars, and the cadence of the song tell a story of sadness, anger, frustration, and betrayal. Chloe’s character provides for this man in ways the other women in his life aren’t doing. Yet he refuses to commit to her and so the video ends with her throwing away the flowers he sent her, full of frustration, and tired of how she’s being treated. As per usual, her creativity is phenomenal, and she will no doubt only get better with time.
Chloe is currently working on her next album made. In preparation, she made a comeback earlier this year with the release of two singles, “Treat Me” and “Surprise,” the former of which featured a prominent sample of “Ms. New Booty” by the Ying Yang Twins from 2005 and the former of which featured a music video by Diana Kunst.
