Give me a P! Give me an O! Give me a W! Give me an E! Give me an R! – Cue the pom-poms shaking together quickly. – POWER!! Well, that’s just what we have got on our hands, an absolute power duo of Meg thee Stallion and Flo Milli on their newest track, “Roc Steady.”
First the song itself of course has to be discussed. It has that certain je ne sais quoi to it, that song you can listen to with your girlfriends when some annoying boy just did something immature and crappy to you. You’re sitting in the car singing your hearts out and screaming about the fabulous girl power you guys inhabit. But the song itself has the old-school rap feel to it, a great beat, and a wonderful melody. Now the music video is really where it hits.
Before I even watched it I wrote that it had that “High School feel” to it and that’s where music video director, Colin Tilley, really took it. The video focuses on the two popular cheerleaders, Meg and Flo, as they dominate the halls all while hiding that they are vampires. The music video opens up with a newspaper reading that boys had mystically died at the local High School all being fully drained of blood. You think back to the shows you watched in the 2000’s such as The Vampire Diaries or Jennifers’ Body and you always think of those popular girls and what they were hiding. The roles that Meg and Flo play out in this video give you the perfect insight into that feeling. And let us not forget to mention how incredible the choreography is. Of course, you can’t think of Meg Thee Stallion and forget what an incredible dancer she is. But the mix between cheer and hip-hop was brilliant. It is almost that perfect yearly 2000’s MTV feel and makes you transcend time just for a second. The stage direction, colors, and whole feel of it were done perfectly. This collaboration was well overdue, but man did they hit the nail on the head. Or should I see the vampire teeth on the neck?
