NLE Choppa teamed up with Lil Wayne to release their new single and music video, “Ain’t Gonna Answer,” and took the opportunity to pay homage to Weezy, Cash Money, the Hot Boys, “Back That Azz Up,” and more.
The song features a prominent sample of the “What we doing? Makin’ money/What they doing? Hatin’ on us” refrain from Wayne and Baby’s “Stuntin’ Like My Daddy” and even gives the nod to the Tunechi deep cut “Private Dancer.” Directed by Zaeim, the video includes a Hollygrove sign and some vibes reminiscent of the “Fireman” video from the Carter II era. Choppa also tapped into the spirit of Tha Carter III and IV’s album art in his Instagram promo for the track.
“Ain’t Gonna Answer” is one of several tracks that the Memphis rapper has dropped this year, following “Champions,” “Mo Upfront,” and “23,” all of which will appear on his upcoming album Cottonwood 2, set to release on April 14. The album will feature guest appearances from Pooh Shiesty, Rod Wave, and DaBaby, and marks Choppa’s first full-length offering since January 2022 when he dropped Me vs. Me. It will also serve as the official follow-up to his debut album Top Shotta, released in August 2020 and included hit singles such as “Walk Em Down” and “Narrow Road,” along with features from Lil Baby, Roddy Ricch, and Chief Keef.
