If you are currently aware of what is happening within the rap industry, you will know that there is some major beef, particularly between Kendrick Lamar and Drake. The two have gone back and forth with diss-tracks against each other, one of these including “Push Ups” by Drake.
“Push Ups” is Drake’s rebuttal following Kendrick’s diss in his verse on “Like That” by Metro Boomin and Furutre. Kendrick rapped “motherf**k the big three, n***a it’s just big me,” which was a response to J. Cole claiming that the current “big three” in rap is himself, Drake, and Kendrick. While J. Cole was initially upset by the diss, he ultimately bowed out of the beef, choosing to remain peaceful. Drake however, has remained publicly upset, leading to “Push Ups” as well as multiple other diss tracks between him and K Dot.
The track includes a typical Drake flow on top of a moody, villainous beat. There is a theatrical element with the piano throughout the track, overall capturing a dark, almost horror-movie vibe, perfect for an intense diss track. Despite the ominous sound, there are still standard rap elements such as heavy bass, emphasized hi-hats, and an overall upbeat production. “Push Ups” quickly rose in popularity, leading to people tuning into the beef, even those outside of the rap industry.
