It’s often said that wearing your heart on your sleeve is a bad thing and that you should regard doing so with caution, but Ella Mai is open about it and arguably shows that it’s her superpower.
The deluxe version of her sophomore album, “Heart On My Sleeve’ was released earlier this month (Feb. 2nd). The deluxe version features 18 tracks, three more than the original, where she’s just as honest about her relationship experiences including her heartbreaks, falling in love, simply being in her “grown and sexy” era, and so much more.
The tracks take you between trying to deny her feelings for someone so their relationship won’t end terribly like the last and there’s definitely a bit of push and pull between Mai moving between her ex and this new person. Incorporating 70s and 2000s beats with a gospel choir in ‘Fallen Angel’ was a highlight especially as she unwraps the idea of being loved unconditionally in a relationship that she feels she shouldn’t be in. Through and through the album was a great listen and the deluxe version did just that!
Ella Mai is also going on her “Heart On My Sleeve” tour later this spring on March 31st after opening for Mary J. Blige last fall. She was recently also nominated for Best Traditional R&B performance with Babyface.
