Travis Scott released a free mixtape exclusively on SoundCloud titled “Days Before Rodeo” on August 18th, 2014. This mixtape would be his second mixtape, gaining insane popularity and building hype for his first studio album, “Rodeo”. On August 23, 2024, 10 years later, he finally released “Days Before Rodeo” on all platforms, introducing it to new fans that may have never heard it before. Despite this mixtape being a re-release, it debuted at No. 1 on Billboard’s Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums, selling 361,000 copies within the first week.
This mixtape has insanely good production that was ahead of it’s time, making the mixtape timeless. With contributions from Atlanta’s top producers such as Southside, TM88, Metro Boomin, Zaytoven, and Sonny Digital it’s clear why the mixtape has such amazing production. Travis Scott perfected his signature vocals during this mixtape, setting a high standard for his future projects.
The single “Drugs You Should Try It” was my favorite from the album and displayed Travis Scott’s genius. I would describe it as an ethereal track that I would listen to on a late night drive down PCH. The track “Mamacita” is also one of my favorites, with features from Young Thug and Rich Homie Quan. They all gave their 100% on this track and created a masterpiece.
