Once again, the 2025 MTV Video Music Awards continues to prove every summer it’s one of the biggest nights in the music industry. The VMAs delivered an unforgettable night filled with iconic tributes, star-studded jaw-dropping performances, and major wins that had fans talking long after the show ended.
On Sunday night, September 7th, artists and stars assembled at the VMAs. The show began with rapper and actor LL Cool J hosting and delivering his opening monologue. Early in the program, Doja Cat interrupted with a pre-taped video that transitioned into her live performance with Kenny G of her single ‘Jealous Type.‘
Later in the night, Mariah Carey graced the stage, glimmering in a gold bodysuit, performing a medley of her hits. Following her performance, Ariana Grande presented Mariah with the most prestigious award, the Video Vanguard Award. This marked Mariah Carey’s first VMAs appearance and performance in 20 years, as well as her first-ever VMA win. Fans took to social media, shocked that this was Mariah’s first VMAs win after her legendary R&B and Pop career.
Shortly after, the VMAs honored Busta Rhymes, who performed a mashup of his hit records, including ‘Break Ya Neck,’ ‘Touch It,’ and ‘Scenario,’ joined by Glorilla, Joyner Lucas, and Papoose. LL Cool J then presented Busta with his Visionary Award, marking Busta’s first VMA win after 16 nominations over his career.
Sabrina Carpenter performed her song ‘Tears’ from her recently released album Manchild. She turned up on the stage in an 80s-themed show. She was joined on stage with backup dancers from popular RuPaul Drag Race Queens, posing and holding up signs and slogans like “Support local drag”, “Protect trans rights”, and “If you hate, you’ll never get laid”. That same night, Sabrina won Best Pop Artist and Best album for “Short n Sweet”.
Another history was made that night as Ricky Martin descended on stage performing a medley of his iconic hits, including Livin’ La Vida Loca. Ricky Martin made history as he won the VMAs’ Inaugural Latin Icon Award. He dedicated his award to his kids and his fans throughout the years.
Lady Gaga delivered one of the most highly anticipated performances of the night. As the most nominated pop artist with 12 nominations, she went on to win four awards, bringing her career total to 22. This achievement places her third in overall wins, following only Beyoncé and Taylor Swift. In her acceptance speech, Gaga expressed her regret at having to leave early, saying, “I wish I could stay and watch all these amazing performances, but I have to go back to Madison Square Garden,” where she was scheduled to perform as part of her ongoing tour.
Lastly, Ariana Grande received a standing ovation from the entire audience as she won the biggest award of the night, Video of the Year for ‘Brighter Days, ‘ during her acceptance speech, ” Thank you to my therapists and gay people” for their support. Ariana also won Best Pop Artist.
