As the highly anticipated, live action version of ‘The Little Mermaid’ approaches, Disney has dropped the first official trailer on March 12th. The trailer features Halle Bailey singing a powerful rendition of “Part of Your World,” the main song from the film; This accompanied with gorgeous visuals, as well as introductions to the characters, makes for an intriguing trailer.
Known for her stunning voice and acting, Halle Bailey is nothing short of a versatile star. In order to make this film come alive, Bailey had been pushing herself hard with 13-hour days on set, particularly the scenes done in water. She also worked hard to cohesively convey some of the elemental changes made in order to modernize the film.
One element of the film that Bailey discussed in an interview with Edition magazine, is how Ariel’s story is more than simply wanting to be human for a boy; It is also about her personal desires and journey, allowing the narrative to shine in a more inspiriting light. It is also meant to be empowering for women specifically since its predecessor, cartoon version simplifies the story as becoming human to acquire a relationship with a man. Bailey stated, “As women, we are amazing, we are independent, we are modern, we are everything and above…and I’m glad that Disney is updating some of those themes.”
Halle Bailey is sure to fulfill the iconic character that is Ariel, and while there might be slight altercations regarding how the plot is portrayed, the empowering nature of the film is sure to win over and impress audiences.
