Even if you don’t watch football, almost everyone tunes in for the Super Bowl Halftime Show. This year, the Super Bowl LVI Halftime show featured iconic performers such as Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, Mary J. Blige, Kendrick Lamar, and Eminem. The lineup had so many people excited about it being a hip-hop performance packed with people who have defined the culture.
Taking the stage at SoFi stadium in Southern California, half of the legendary set of performers are from California themselves. Snoop is from Long Beach, and Kendrick and Dre are both from Compton.
The performance was dope from beginning to end. It started with Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg rapping together on their song, “The Next Episode.” Then the two showed love to their home state with “California Love,” a 2Pac song that Dre is featured on.
50 Cent made a guest appearance during this performance. He hung upside down with dancers surrounding him while he rapped his famous song, “In Da Club.” Anderson .Paak also made a guest appearance, as he played the drums during much of the show.
Mary J. Blige, the hip-hop soul legend appeared in a one-piece and shiny silver thigh-high boots. She sang her hits, “Family Affair” and “No More Drama” while giving us choreo and a phenomenal vocal performance.
Kendrick Lamar performed his song, “Alright” with a group of men dressed in all black surrounding him. The men alongside Lamar nail their choreography, which was perfectly synced to many of the camera angles and movements.
Eminem was the last performer to take the stage, wearing a classic t-shirt and hoodie. He rapped his award-winning song, “Lose Yourself.”
The performance closes with Dre and Snoop rapping a song with one of the most recognizable piano melodies in hip hop. They kill it with their performance of “Still D.R.E.” and all five of the performers (plus 50 Cent) stand together once the song is over.
This halftime show will leave a mark as an important piece of music history.
